Current Work
MRWS is the Government programme to identify and implement long-term management solutions for the UK’s radioactive waste. It has four stages, of which three are finished.
Stage 1 (2001-2002) – a consultation on the whole MRWS process
Stage 2 (2002-2006) – CoRWM’s review of options for managing higher activity solid wastes and the Government’s response to CoRWM’s recommendations (see Key Issues section)
Stage 3 (2007-08) – a consultation on the framework for implementing geological disposal and publication of responses (www.defra.gov.uk/environment/radioactivity/waste)
Stage 4 (2008 onwards) – implementation of geological disposal, starting with a White Paper and an invitation to communities to enter discussions about hosting a geological disposal facility (www.defra.gov.uk/environment/radioactivity/mrws)
Our 2009 - 2012 Work Programme
Government has asked CoRWM to agree with Ministers a 3-year rolling programme. Our programme for the second 3-year period is here. We have a detailed programme for 2009-2010 and an outline one for subsequent years. In 2009-10 we propose to:
complete our reports on Geological Disposal and R&D.
carry out our own public and stakeholder engagement (PSE) and scrutinise the PSE of other organisations.
For our 2009-10 work programme we have six Task Groups. Their leaders, members, workplans and tasks are here. A summary of our milestones and deliverables is here, it should be read in conjunction with task group workplans.
In 2009 the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee called for evidence on setting science and technology research funding priorities. CoRWM's response is here.
In early December 2009 CoRWM held meetings with OCNS on making more information available to the public about assuring security at existing and new nuclear facilities, and with NII about the Geneirc Design Assessment (GDA) process for new reactors. After these meetings CoRWM still had questions about the assessment and mitigation of aircraft impact risks. CoRWM summarised its current understanding and questions and asked NII and OCNS to respond. The note based on the summary and the responses is now available (CoRWM doc 2740).
CoRWM asked stakeholders in e-bulletin 37 to submit any information on new build wastes that they wished to draw to the Committee's attention.
The compilation of responses is now available (CoRWM doc 2755).
